My Ruminations

I know some Welsh people who absolutely abhor the term 'Cambro-Briton, personally I see nothing wrong with it: We are the Cambro-Britons, then there are the Cumbro-Britons; the Strathclyde Britons; the Cornish Britons; the Bretons and the Bretonans.
These terms are used to distinguish the different Brythonic or British peoples, they have an ancient history and mustn't be confused with the post 1707 name which was appropriated for the new State after the union of Scotland with England. Admittedly the word British has since come to have a new meaning and now includes the English, Scots and even Northern Irish, but that doesn't mean that we who know it to have another meaning from farther back, to the time before Scotland and England existed have to necessarily avoid using it ourselves in its older, truer sense.
P.S.Since perhaps the 6th century B.C. the Greeks knew us by the terms Ppettavia and Bpettuavia (Britain); Bpettavoç (a Briton); and Bpettavlkog (the adjective British: the Romans evolved Britannia; Britannus and Britannicus respectively: all these words derive from the Gallo-Brittonic and are similar to both Priteni, the Britons' term for the Picts, and Prydein, the Welsh word for Britain, and thus the Greeks may have picked up (probably from the Gauls) an insular name that the Britons called themselves or a particular British tribe. At the end of the ancient world and the beginning of the middle ages, it was the British political and ecclesiastical elites who defined Brittonic identity, and defined it, at least in part, by what the Britons were not: namely , Pagan and English. The first unambiguous references to Saxon raids on Britain appear c.400 A.D. King Ine's laws
(c.700) show that Wilisc and Englisc are living side by side in Wessex. In the early Anglo-Saxon laws the old English word Wealh, from whence 'Welsh' derives, could denote either a Briton or a slave. While Cornwall and Brittany maintained some degree of Brittonic culture in the early middle ages, it was Wales that defined medieval 'Britishness'. If we take the end of the Brittonic age to be about 600, the history of Wales proper could be said to begin. The Brittonic languages and myths enjoyed a flowering from the 11th to the 14th centuries. It proved to be the twilight of the Britons before the onset of distinctly Welsh, Cornish and Breton identities. The land through which Dafydd ap Gwilym wandered in the 14th century was where Britannia had become Cymru. Kymry or Cymry made its appearence in the 'Armes Prydein Vawr' composed between 935 and 950 as part of the larger group, 'the Brython' about an alliance of all the Britons (from Wales; Strathclyde; Cornwall and Brittany) rising again together to prevail over the German foreigners who were beginning to dominate the affairs of Britain and one day create England.

John Page and Rhobert ap Steffan (Castro) arrived on friday morning, they brought me a beautiful dragon waistcoat, a book (The Welsh Wars of Independance c.415-c.1415)by David Moore, magazines, a newspaper multivitamins & multiminerals and a Caernarvon (sic) investiture mug all in English as a touch of irony; My nephew Glenn Le Merdy allowed them to stay in his house while he's off for the week-end with his music. Yesterday we went for a midday meal in the garden of Louis l'Official's house in Poullaouen and today they're off to see Guy Le Corre at his home in Beg Meilh. Sharon, Iwan, Gareth & Rebecca turned up friday night, they've got a property down the road at Fransec, a warm evening was had; they came back last night and another warm evening was had by all, Cymraeg (Welsh) spoken all evening and a lot of comparing to Breton being done. Gareth and Rebecca have just come back from the Isle of Wight festival and before that a wedding, a slight hiatus from their morning gym regime. In three quarter's of an hour I'll be leaving for the pub and at 3 o'clock we'll be celebrating the French Festival of music with Jean- Claude and his friends coming to play all day in front of the pub.

I'd completely forgotten that today I should have been expecting a visit from Cheltenham Cycling Club, until they turned up at 5 o'clock. Some, if not all will be coming back tomorrow.

It was a pleasure today to see people from my hometown of Merthyr Tydfil. Jamie's been here before and so has Darren whom I met originally in the Porthcawl Inter-Celtic festival and later at Meic Steven's birthday party. It was the first time for Eifion from Twynyrodyn; Eifion and Jamie together with two other boys and two girls form 'Y Bettigalws', they will be playing at the Bedroc '09 Bedlinog Welsh Festival on June 19-21(so will Meic Stevens)(see above for programme). They spent last night in Treguier and before that called in to see Guy Corre's sister-in-law Rhiwannon Kervella in Plufur, tomorrow they are off to Louis L'Official's house in Poullaouen for a mid-day meal.

Re: David Dimbleby

From a friend:

Did anyone else make the mistake last night of watching 'The Seven Ages of Britain' (BBC 1 9pm)? It started off, interestingly enough, with David Dimbleby rowing on a murky, pre-dawn Thames. From then on it was downhill.

When he started talking about great finds from the Thames I thought I knew what was coming (the Battersea shield), but I was wrong. The 'treasure' he was referring to was the head of a statue of a Roman emperor. The kind of street furniture that was knocked out by the thousand in Roman times. And this set the tone for the programme, it was about the Romans, who had come to bring order to the "barbarian chaos" that was Britain.

Then, about half way through, the setting suddenly switched to the Western Isles. This introduced Columba who, according to Dimblebore, "brought Christianity to Britain". Really! Columba came from Ireland. Christianity had been introduced to Ireland by the Briton (i.e. Welshman) Patrick. Therefore Britain was Christian before Ireland. (In fact, Columba came to convert the Picts of northern Scotland.)

How was Dimblebore allowed to make such an elementary mistake? Someone involved with the programme must have known the truth - were they afraid to correct the great man?

He then talked of invasions from many quarters upon Britain following the collapse of Rome. True. But Dimblebore made no mention of the Irish or the Picts; the only ones he was interested in was the Anglo-Saxons. Cue Sutton Hoo and panegyrics to these noble people. He even - shades of Michael Wood - had a go at speaking Anglo-Saxon.

At this point I switched off.

Here we have a programme about 'Britain' which is really the 19th century English imperialist interpretation of 'savage' British natives conquered and part-civilised by Rome and Britain then morphing into Anglo-Saxon England. No centuries of conflict between the invaders and the native Welsh, no Welsh Christianity. In fact, in Dimblebigot's narrative the Welsh are written out of it entirely.

I suspect that this bastard, like many English aware of the history of this island, has a problem with the Welsh. To acknowledge us is to admit that this island was once ours. So we must be denied. Which explains why 'Question Time' when it comes from Wales is stacked with an English panel and an English audience. (Though it begs the question: why is Dimblebigot allowed to get away with it by the Welsh production company that owns QT?)

Our Welsh Left tells us to focus on and fight the BNP or UKIP, but people like Dimblebigot are far more dangerous. They are the BBC, they are the Establishment, they have far more influence than the BNP and UKIP. And they probably hold us in greater contempt than either of those parties. Trouble is, no one would dare call Dimblebigot the racist he is.

I will. And I suggest that we all start realising who our enemies are. The BNP and UKIP are an annoyance but Dimblebigot and his ilk are real power and influence. They don't have to go knocking on the doors of sink estates in Essex and Lancashire to put their message across, they have the power to reach everyone's living room and have their interpretation unquestioningly accepted. That is real power!

Re: "Strange News From Another Star EP Launch" Clwb Ifor Bach, Caerdydd/Cardiff

Jimmy Watkins sent a message to the members of Strange News From Another Star EP Launch.

--------------------
Subject: This Friday - Panicbasket, Goodtime Boys and SNFAS

It's February, I can drink alcohol again. But haven't. YET. I will do though, and when I do, I won't stop until Saturday...meaning that on Friday night alcoholic madness will be at its peak for this super sexy night of music.
Doors are at 7.30pm and it costs five pounds to get in.
Anyway, if you have said you're coming, it's too late to back out now. Rumour has it that Mark Foley has had a haircut. That, alone, is worth coming to see.

Okay, so get your clothes sorted...clean those jeans, spit on those dancing daps, and tell your parents/guardians that you'll be home late on Friday with a terrible ringing in your head.

See you there.

Oh yeah, and wear as much denim as possible. It'll not only turn you on, but it will turn me on too!
