The British were named 'Welsh' by the Germanic invaders who went on to colonise the 'lost lands' of Lloegyr, which was renamed England after the Angles of the north. For a while the Angles of Northumbria fought with us for the sovereign crown of the island and eventually took it from us although we refer to the English as 'Sais' which comes from 'Saxon' whose most famous king at the time of Hywel Dda & Rhodri Mawr was Alfred the Great, Alfred was known as 'The Great' probably for the great sums of money he paid the Danes to leave him in peace, whereas Rhodri was called 'Great' because he fought and killed the Danish threat. Edward Longshanks annexed the Principality but not the whole country, that was left to Henry VIII who's father brought the English into submission when we retook the crown, but who himself totally subsumed the land of Cymru/Wales. This is not a history lesson but a point of constitution; we were taken into Great Britain (administrative not geographic) not as equal partners but as part of England. Today I take it that we are no longer part of England so there must be an anomaly, we should either be signed in or out, either way we are still British because that is who we are and have been since before the first Englishman set foot on British soil, but if we have been written out of England it must follow that we have left the UK and the rule of Elizabeth the queen & her English law.
