Cymru 1969 has left a new comment on the post "Dafydd Wigley: The Gloss Wears Thin":
This story goes back well into the 80's when African and Asian Nations questioned why there were 4 football nations and instead of one Great Britain side. They used 1958 as the example as Cymru, England ,Norn Ireland and Scotland all qualified. The Africans and Asians were at the time wanted more sides from their zones/ continents being allowed to qualify for the World cup finals.
There are other issues involved as well such as the Soviet Union in which after the communist empire collapsed 15 new national sides were in effect eventually created – Ukraine, Georgia, Latvia, Russia etc.
The African and Asian nations also can't understand and rightly so how the 4 'home' nations all have a permanent voice on FIFA councils and don't have to face any elections ?
The FAW in seeing the danger then set up the League of Wales. Not a popular move but it ended any speculation at that time but even then 6 of the bigger sides are not in the league due to historical reasons and a rather costly court case.
What of the future ??? Well since the formation of the league of Wales which is now the Welsh Premier League we have of course got a Welsh Assembly. This has helped cool things down but it won't be long before the African and Asian nations pick up on the fact that Catalonia has got more powers than the Senedd but still does not have a National side. Sepp Blatter of FIFA has already made two u turns on the team UK issue. And yes short term it won't affect the Welsh football team but what happens when Blatter retires or is forced to resign? It may take 10 years before the old question pops up why are there 4 national teams instead of one? And most likely scenario is we could end up having an England and Wales side.
I can't remember Wiggly being against Caernarfon Town being forced to join the League of Wales so his stance has surprised me.
