What's in a name? (_laflemme) replied to a comment you left in a LiveJournal post. The comment they replied to was:
You could just as well be speaking about France, they've always been guilty of cultural genocide against their own citizens; there are numerous languages in France spoken by historical regions and countries, but everyone was forced to speak Langued'oïl which they call 'French', in the same way that the French call Mandarin 'Chinese'. In the 1920's after a third of the Breton male population gave their lives for France, the Government decided to extirminate the Breton Language, as it was thought bad for the unity of the State. This comment is interesting, because I also thought of France right away. However, I didn't think of Breton; I thought of Créole and how people going to school in the Caribbean would be (literally) hit if they spoke in Créole during lessons.
