HARRI WEBB.
Rampage & Revel
Rebecca and Her Daughters
(1842)
There's a stirring in the hedgerows,
There's a clink of bridle chains,
There's a gathering in the by-ways,
There are hoofbeats in the lanes,
There's a secret army rising
To set the law to right,
Rebecca and her daughters,
Are riding through the night.
Riding, riding,
Riding through the night.
For the tollgates are a burden
On the poor folk of the land,
And the word's gone out in whispers
They shall no longer stand.
There's a people out of patience,
They would rather strike than wait,
Rebecca and her daughters
Are riding to the gate.
Riding, riding
Riding to the gate.
With torches and with axes
She has cleared the country roads,
Proclaiming that the highways
Are free for all men's loads,
And as she smashed the tollgates
On the path to liberty
With Rebecca and her daughters
We'll ride to victory.
We're riding, riding,
Riding till Wales is free.
