WELSH VALLEYS HUMOUR by David Jandrell
Rugby
Rugby has always played a big part in Welsh valley life. This game will be regarded as the most important thing in a village. All the local lads will be encouraged to play, and the Rugby Club will be the centre of the social life of the village. The doors will be open seven nights a week, catering for activities such as darts, pool, cards, dominoes, bingo, pigeon clubs... oh, and rugby. Any special social occasions will take place in the club. Birthdays, kiddies' discos, engagement parties, funeral wakes, and weddings will have the exclusive use of all the facilities, including the spacious car park which can double up as a handy place to 'fool around' with someone else's spouse, whilst at the same time being able to accommodate a brawl of anything up to 40 people. This facility is actually very popular following wedding receptions. These brawls normally start between the families of the bride and groom, but will include everyone on the guest list, including the bar staff and groundsman, by the time the police
arrive.
There is generally a slight interest in the rugby team itself, with a few stalwarts who watch every game come rain or shine. The big events come during the Six Nations Championships. This is usually associated with trips to watch these Internationals, and more importantly, the away games!
